The South Frisco Jazz Band is one of the longest existing bands in Jazz: Founded in 1956 by some jazz enthusiasts during their high school days, they started playing at local coffee houses, then they moved on tto he jazz clubs in the Bay area and the whole state of California. Finally, the musicians were invited to play nearly every important festival throughout the USA, and then also to Europe and Japan.
Musically, the SFJB is typical "West Coast trad", showing influences of their heros Lu Watters and Turk Murphy, among others. Their unique speciality is their two-cornet-sound in the tradition of King Oliver-Louis Armstrong.
The South Frisco Jazz Band has disbanded around 2001 after a very long musical life of nearly 45 years.
In this clip we hear the band play a Jelly Roll Morton composition called "Little Lawrence"
In this session recorded at the Crazy Horse Saloon in St Ana in Califfornia we see the band at the height of their career. They were stylistically the top band in the United States.
Leader Vince Saunders banjo, Leon Oakley cornet, Dan Comins cornet, Mike Baird clarinet, Jim Snyder trombone, Robbie Rhodes piano, Bob Rann tuba and Bob Raggio washboard
