It is very diffucult to use but sounds amazing when used correctly. People called "producers" or "composers"(such as yuyoyuppe or Livetune)make songs and then have the vocaloid sing the songs. There are thousands of producers and songs by vocaloid. People called "nico singers" often cover these songs. They are called this because most of the vocaloid videos come from a japanese site called nico nico douga(basically the japanese version of youtube).

no it is not an anime. there is, however, doujinshi featuring vocaloid. There is also a gag manga featuring the characters but basically it is a VERY popular singing program.
