45 years ago with his iconic performance James Brown was able to save Boston from the violent rioting that was plaguing other U.S. cities, particularly the more racially divided cities, in the wake of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.
"Welcome to the James Brown Channel,
where all month long we're commemorating the 45th anniversary
of the Night James Brown Saved Boston.
The date was April 5th, 1968, and the previous day
the country was shocked by the assassination of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
Tempers across the country, especially those in the most
racially divided cities in America,
were boiling over as angry citizens sought a means
to express their outrage at the death of such an
important voice for their struggle.
In Boston, James Brown performed a concert
that had a major role in the city's ability to avoid a major riot.
More of the story is right here on The James Brown Channel.
We're on the move now.
Yes, we are on the move and
no wave of racism can stop us.
America produced a Dr. King but it also produced a James Brown.
They might have been flip sides to the same record
but they were the same affect
and they in many ways articulate what a whole nation needed to hear.
It may even mean physical death but
if it means that I will die standing up for the freedom of my people.
Brought to you by the folks at SHOUT! factory,
a group of people dedicated to preserving the legacy
of artists like James brown."
