Tom Cat Blues -- Joe Oliver/Jelly Roll Morton 1924
An important part in the history of jazz was the recording where Joe "King" Oliver and Jelly "Roll" Morton recorded just two sides for the Autograph label in Chicago on December 24 1924. Of these two I let you listen to the Tom Cat Blues. The flip side was the King Porter Stomp. Just over a year later Oliver would start his Dixie Syncopators and Morton his Red Hot Peppers.
I believe this is the only time that these two established jazz stars would come together to record.
My new youtube friend, a professor of jazz in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has taken on to teach youngsters the essentials of classic jazz. With his students he runs the "New Orleans Jazz Band". Joao Missali plays cornet and is a great fan of King Oliver. Approximately a year ago he played the Tom Cat Blues in an unbelievable Oliver manner with a young pianist by the name of Alexandre Hage who fully understood the Morton approach and style of playing:

Fortunately, even today, the jazz traditions are maintained. Thank you Joao and Alexandre!
