This is from XEXEX, definitely one of Konami's greatest achievements in scrolling shooters, and also one of the least known, unfortunately. The music was done, as per usual, by the Konami Kukeiha Club, and was released to arcades in 1993. The problem with it being so advanced for its time is that they couldn't do a console port, and this was during the time that SFII was casting a shadow over everything else in the arcade scene, so it got overlooked. That, and they made some poor descisions with the world version. If they had managed a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis port, it might have been more successful, but it would have been EXTREMELY butchered. There actually was a cut down version of the second level included as a minigame on Ganbare Goemon 2 for the Super Famicom, but even THAT had trouble with slowdown.
UPDATED: Out of The Blue From The Hyperspace Jump is my favorite tune from the soundtrack, and this isn't a soundtrack lacking in good tunes. It shows up in level 6, right after "Happy Daymare" (another awesome track), when you start to go into hyper space, which is incredibly cool all around. The hyperspace travels lasts for most of the level, minus the start and the boss, and I got incredibly pumped while all this was going on, what with the combination of a fast song and a blindingly fast level.
Xexex is really great, and now that I've actually played it I'd probably be willing to call it my favorite side scrolling shooter. My favorite top down shooter is MUSHA, and its going to be hard to choose between the two for favorite overall.
