Frédéric Chopin's Berceuse, Op. 57, is a lullaby to be played on the piano. He composed it in 1843/44. Chopin originally called his work Variantes. Berceuse was first published in Paris in 1844 by Jean-Racine Meissonnier, dedicated to Élise Gavard, and appeared in London and Leipzig the following year.
Written late in his career, the lyrical piece features complex pianistic figuration in the continuous flow of variations on a calm bass in always soft dynamics, shaping the music by texture and sonority.
Chopin’s third Piano Sonata is the most forward-looking sonata in its intense chromatism and advanced harmony.
The Mazurka is a Polish folk dance in ¾ metre, the first “composed” examples going back to the middle of the 18-th century. It became a symbol of Polish patriotism, expressing the indomitable Polish identity and vitality. Chopin’s Mazurkas are “not meant to be danced” as he himself declared. They are highly artistic, harmonically complex miniatures, expressing the deeper human feelings of joy and exultation, but also melancholy and despair. Chopin wrote them during his whole lifetime, from youthful scribblings to highly sophisticated late works.
Frédéric Chopin almost exclusively wrote for the piano. His last published work however was the Cello Sonata Op. 65, written for his close friend and cellist Auguste Franchomme.
