Why visit Zadar and it`s surroundings?
Small city with great history
The title of the most popular tourist destinations in this part of Europe was given to the cities like Dubrovnik and Split. Zadar is rarely found written in the itineraries of ever growing number of visitors to Croatia. Those who decided to include it in their travel plans will agree that Zadar is one of the hidden gems that are worth to find. Why it has to be on your list of top destinations? We know at least five reasons:
1. Location
If you're on a short break, location is the key. Zadar is located in the heart of the Adriatic coast. It is, therefore, easy to reach by air, sea or land. It has its own airport which is located outside the city and offering affordable flights from bigger places in Europe. Zadar can be reached by ferry or catamaran, and if you like car rides, well-connected roads will ensure you a comfortable ride.
2. Starting point
Zadar is a great starting point to explore the beautiful surroundings. Smaller places around the city like Petrcane, Bibinje, Zaton or Sukosani are breakaway from the city noise. If you're a nature lover National parks such as Kornati, Mljet, Northern Velebit or Plitvice Lakes are only a few hours away by boat or by car. The smell of the sea and picturesque landscape will follow you wherever you decide to go.
3. Small but great
They say that the city of Zadar is small enough that you can stream through it without great effort and big enough to display 3000 years of history. The historical sites are located on the Zadar's peninsula, through which you can use a natural guide - Kalelarga, Zadar's biggest and most popular street. In one walk through the cobbled streets, you will find a church of St. Donatus, a cathedral of St. Anastasia, the Forum from the Roman times... You can relax in one of the coffee shops that are located all throughout Zadar's main street and enjoy watching the people that are passing by.
4. The most beautiful sunset
Famous Alfred Hitchcock could not remain immune to the most beautiful sun dipping into the sea. That way he got included in the company of many European writers and travelers, who admired the Zadar's sunset. Since 2006, the sunset is even more beautiful because it's accompanied by the two architectural installations, which are declared to be the most attractive - Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun. Apart from providing a unique atmosphere with tones generated by the sea and play of lights, they are proof that Zadar is a blend of modern and historic beauties.
5. Carefree vacation
Tukikid said that the city is its people, not its walls. If you spend at least a little time in this city, you will feel the spirit of its inhabitants, which is reputed to be carefree. It will not take long for you to indulge in this spirit if you, by the Zadar's custom, spend a few hours sipping coffee. This is not just your ordinary coffee sipping but watching passers-by, finding out the news, negotiating new meetings and simply - enjoyment. The most well-known drink - Maraschino will help you to be more relaxed. Be sure to take a bottle of it as a souvenir because it is Zadar's autochthonous product.
