"Bewitched," the television comedy starring Dick York and Elizabeth Montgomery as Darrin and Samantha Stephens, man and witch - er, wife, premiered in 1964.
The theme song was written by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller. Greenfield had written a number of successful songs with Neil Sedaka. Keller later recalled, "The pilot had used Frank Sinatra's 'Witchcraft,' but they didn't want to pay for 'Witchcraft,' so they asked us to write something. We only had a week to write the song, do the demo, and get it out to California, and they accepted it and they put it on." But when the show aired the following season, an instrumental version of the song was used with music provided by Warren Baker who composed music for the series.
Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller also wrote the theme song for "Gidget."

Steve Lawrence recorded the song and it was used for the flip-side of his 1964 single "I Will Wait For You." As far as I've been able to determine, it was never released on any album. In 2005 when the movie starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrel premiered, the song was included on the soundtrack, 41 years after it had been written.
For this video, I used video excerpts from the original 1964 pilot episode of "Bewitched" along with photographs of Elizabeth Montgomery.
When "Bewitched" premiered in 1964, Elizabeth Montgomery was 31 years old; Dick York was 36.
Watching Ms. Montgomery and looking at the photographs, I have to say that she was one of most beautiful television actresses in the past 40 years. She is greatly missed!
BEWITCHED
(Words and Music by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller)
Bewitched! Bewitched!
You've got me in your spell.
Bewitched! Bewitched!
You know your craft so well.
Before I knew what you were doing
I looked in your eyes.
That brand of woo that you've been brew-in'
took me by surprise.
You witch! You witch!
One thing is for sure -
That stuff you pitch,
just hasn't got a cure.
My heart was under lock and key,
but somehow it got unhitched.
I never thought my heart could be had.
But now I'm caught and I'm kinda glad to be,
to be bewitched!
Bewitched! Bewitched!
My heart was under lock and key,
but somehow it got unhitched.
I never thought my heart could be had.
But now I'm caught and I'm kinda glad
that you, you do
that crazy voodoo
and I'm bewitched by you!
