Niandra LaDes and Usually Just A T-Shirt - released in 1994, this would the first of many wacky and wonderful solo albums by ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers' guitarist, John Frusciante. Perhaps his most avant-garde effort, a harrowingly beautiful record with some pyschadelica influences, made using mostly acoustic guitars; some noisy overdubbing; scratchy, fuzzy, lo-fi production; and howling off-key stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Created by Frusciante to create "interesting music", as he felt it no longer existed.
The record can be split into two albums: Niandra LaDes is a tad more conventional structurally and was recorded during weekends at the same time as Blood Sex Sugar Magik in 1991. The second half, Usually Just A T-Shirt, is composed of more experimental untitled tracks, often short instrumentals, and was recorded after Frusciante's first departure from the Chili Peppers in 1992, and was only released at the urging of friends such as River Phoenix, Johnny Depp, Gibby Haynes and Flea.
Frusciante later admitted that his first two albums were partially released for drug money. It's worth stressing, however, that he wasn't using Heroin and Cocaine at time of recording, although he was at time of release.

This is honestly one of the most overwhelmingly emotional albums I've listened to, and also one of my favourite albums of all time. It never fails to make me stop and feel something - something which I find rarely occurs for me outside of Classical music. I've never done drugs and never will do - heck, I don't even touch alcohol myself - but it's telling about the strength of this that I can still connect with it so well. I might be unique, therefore, in being an RHCP fan who prefers RHCP sans Frusciante, but also a Frusciante fan who prefers Frusciante sans RHCP.
I guess to anyone else the godawful production and the horrifically out-of-tune vocals make this a deal breaker; I would respond and say that's what makes it all the more magical.
