1998-9 - Best movie about the effects and trauma of war in the hearts, minds and total psyche of a soldier or marine ever made. While the movie's backdrop is the Battle of Guadalcanal WW2, it is rather the background narrative voice representing what the soldier or marine constantly thinks, feels, yearns for and fear, sometimes even in the heat of battle, that makes this a must-see movie for anyone wishing to understand the trauma that goes with fighting in a war, and losing your comrades. As a bonus, some of the most enchanting music you may ever hear...

PS I'm not from the US - I'm an ex-marine from South Africa, having experienced this in Angola 1982/3 (together with my army infantry brothers) --- it matters very little to me whether these in the movie were GI's or marines --- we all suffer...

And the fatty kiddies ... back off, will you ? This is for serious people who've experienced the burning side of life, so rather go read the book and/or watch the movie to learn something
