Placenta birth/ 3rd stage. homebirth

Sorry there is no sound, and the video freezes for the first minute, it does start-up though and freezes again at about 4:30 till 5:02.... but it was the best we could do.

The 3rd stage of labour is from the birth of the baby until the placenta comes out. In most modern births the 3rd stage is managed, including drugs to make the uterus contract and the care provider pulling on the cord to get the placenta born quickly. In a physiological/natural 3rd stage the placenta comes when the body is ready, this would usually be after the cord has finished supplying most of the blood to the baby.
Also the mumma is allowed time to connect with her baby before the next lot of hard work is done.

In my homebirth the third stage contractions started up again about 25 minutes after his birth and the placenta was born about 45 minutes after his birth. My midwife checks a few times to see if there is blood in the water (you see her using a torch), which there is not. Once the placenta is out my midwife checked my uterus to make sure it was responding the way it should be and it was. I also lost minimal blood (about 350ml).

I hope you enjoy watching this and gain some understanding of what a physiological third stage is like :)
