United Nations, New York City, 21 June 2011 - Three hundred and fifty thousand mothers and millions of infants die every year due to complications during pregnancy and birth. These deaths could be prevented if proper medical care and attention were available to mothers worldwide. In an effort to reduce maternal deaths, the Lao People's Democratic Republic has instituted a new midwifery-training programme in order to provide proper pre-natal and post-natal care in areas where needed.
