Darryl Reeves - Mercury - 2012

Noted saxophonist Darryl Reeves announces the April 17th release of Mercury (Epic Life Music Group), a milestone album that seamlessly fuses jazz, hip hop, and funk. After an eight-year hiatus, Reeves returns to the scene with a new crew: keyboardist Kenny Banks, Jr., bassist Joel Powell, and drummer Kenton Bostick. Mercury features an array of gifted special guests, including Valencia Robinson, Carmen Rodgers, Rasheeda Ali, Gwen Bunn, LotusLove, Kebbi Williams, D-Focis, and Dashill "SunnovahKind" Smith.

On Mercury, Reeves presents a strong balance of musical exploration and sound architecture. The band reinvents "Think Twice," the Donald Byrd / Mizell Bros. classic, with Valencia Robinson, and Onaje Allan Gumbs' "Every Time I See You" with Gwen Bunn. Alongside these covers, collaborative originals round out the record, including "Dark Matter with Carmen Rodgers, "Paradise" with Rasheeda Ali, and "Mercenaries" with Dashill Smith.

In addition to his own work, Reeves regularly sidesteps easy classification, bringing his knowledge as a musician and audio engineer to other recordings and live productions. Reeves caught Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson's attention with his soulful jazz-funk remixes of Jay-Z's Black Album, which Thompson incorporated into his famed DJ sets. Recently, Reeves music directed multiple acclaimed sets with Aishah Rashied Hyman's Spread Love and DJ Kemit.

Darryl Reeves was born in Jackson, MS to a musical family. He grew up in Miami, and quickly adopted the alto saxophone as his instrument. Moved by hip-hop samples originating from jazz, Reeves was influenced by Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Reeves graduated from Jackson State University with a Bachelors in Music Education, andsubsequently released The Activator (2002), a straight-up gem that solidified his place as an emerging player. He then completed his Masters of Music at the University of New Orleans.

In 2004, Reeves released the funky and playful Diary of a Bandstand, to ample acclaim. It featured Robert Glasper, Russell Gunn, Quamon Fowler, and the late Lumark Gulley, cementing Reeves' reputation for presenting a new outlook on the sound, style, and production of jazz music. Currently a senior faculty member at the Art Institute of Atlanta, his expertise in audio production has expanded his creative and technical approach to music. He has toured and recorded with celebrated artists including Roy Ayers, Frank McComb, Julie Dexter, Kirk Whalum, Jill Scott, Phonte, Toku, Takana Miyamoto, Ede Wright, Les Nubians and most recently, Janelle Monáe and B.O.B.
