My favourite dancer from James Govan's 1987 album on UK Charly. The tracks for this album were recorded in 1982 at David Johnson's Broadway Sound Studio in Sheffield, Alabama. The studio had formerly been owned by Quin Ivy and was better known as Quinvy - Percy Sledge recorded "When A Man Loves A Woman" there, and there was also a wealth of classic Southern Soul recorded at Broadway, and released on the Quinvy and South Camp labels.
The James Govan album would not get released until 1987, and then only in the UK and Europe through Charly. It's one of the finest soul albums of the decade, with a wonderful mix of tortured Deep ballads, and mid-tempo and uptempo songs as well. It has recently been reissued as a two-fer with Sandra Wrights "Wounded Woman" album (also recorded at Broadway, for Stax, and also shelved until its release in the UK in the late 80s) by those nice people at Soulscape.
James Govan has a regular weekly gig at the Rum Boogie Cafe in Memphis.
