Happy birthday, maestro! Happy birthday, Godzilla!

Kinema Sinfonia celebrates 60 years of Godzilla and 100 years of Akira Ifukube with a landmark film score. In 1954, producer Tomoyuki Tanaka happened upon the idea of a giant monster awakened by nuclear tests. This concept was shopped around to a number of directors who turned it down; however, Ishiro Honda, a war veteran whose experiences had solidified his pacifistic worldview, seized the opportunity to make a meaningful statement. The result is a very sobering and human film, replete with terror, drama, and, most of all, tragedy. Bolstered by remarkable special effects work by Eiji Tsuburaya, GODZILLA (Gojira) introduced one of cinema's most enduring icons and put Akira Ifukube's name on the map in a very big way. The legendary score (which includes the creature's signature roar and footsteps—also the work of the composer), which Ifukube considered to be one of his finest works, is presented here in its entirety. Included are full on-screen translations for the spoken dialogue and lyrics in "Prayer for Peace" and its reprise, "Ending."
