This video is part of The Quadrum Series and was filmed, edited, engineered, mixed, mastered, and produced in its entirety by Cobus Potgieter.

NO drum replacement was done in this mix, this is a 100% acoustically recorded and mixed track: absolutely no supplementation, layering, or triggering was done.

My approach with The Quadrum Series was a very "back to basics" kind of approach: I was alone in a a room again, nobody around, completely self-contained and simply having fun playing drums. "Just having fun" is more difficult than it sounds when you know millions of people might be watching (trust me!) and I literally spent weeks jamming and getting back to the mindset of simple, uncomplicated enjoyment.. to write patterns for the sake of creativity and fun, NOT for the sake of impressing anybody. I will explain this in more detail during the Behind The Cover feature on this series, but that approach relates directly to this track.

The verse groove was originally much more complicated and busy, but it just didn't sound good to me, it didn't compliment the song. I spent hours on this, trying different variations (and also getting my left hand to play those ghost notes smooth enough..) until this one emerged. I looped it a ton to get it smooth, and now it's one of my all-time favourite patterns to play. That explains this whole series: creativity through discipline and hard work, not just improvising and expecting it to sound good. This was SUCH a weird concept for me to grapple with, because I never really understood this! I love improv and just seeing inspiration and performance happen, but I've found that there's such a healthy and necessary balance between improvisation and preparation: improvisation becomes easier and better and more fluid with better preparation, these two things don't damage each other, they COMPLIMENT each other.

Make this a creative exercise: take a song with no drums, be fearlessly creative, improvise, become frustrated with the things you want to play but can't, and then WORK HARD at becoming able to play what's creatively happening in your head while REFUSING to being limited to what your muscles can do. Improvisation feeds creativity, but discipline makes it real!
