In the winter of 1838 Chopin and his mistress the author George Sand decided to escape the cold and hardship of Paris and find refuge in the mild climate of the Mediterranean, in order to improve his poor health . After a difficult journey to Barcelona they sailed to the island of Mallorca. They couldn’t find suitable lodgings and ended up in the monastery of Valldemossa, a cold, gloomy and draughty place which didn’t protect them against the winter storms. Despite the unfavorable circumstances Chopin found some happiness, he wrote to his friend Julian Fontana on November 15, 1838, "'the sky is like turquoise, the sea azure, the mountains like emeralds, the air like in heaven. Sunny during the day, it's hot and everyone dresses lightly; at night guitars and singing can be heard at all hours". Here Chopin wrote several of his masterworks, which are presented in this video.
