Jazeps Vitols (1863-1948) He was born in Valmiera, Latvia. He was in exile in Germany when he died in Lübeck in 1948. Vitols composed the first "Latvian Symphony" in 1888 and was the first Latvian composer to gain worldwide recognition; he is revered in Latvia as the founder of the school of Latvian national music.
