GYÖRGY LIGETI [1923 - 2006]
'Le Grand Macabre' [1974-77, rev. 1996] Anti-Anti-Opera into Two Acts and Four Scenes. Libretto by György Ligeti in collaboration with Michael Meschke, based on a work by Michel de Ghelderode, 1934 play, 'La balade Du Grand Macabre'.
A co-production of Gran Teatre del Liceu, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Opera di Roma, and English National Opera rec. live from 'GranTeatre del Liceu', Barcelona, Spain, November 2011.
"It is farce, theater of the absurd, but also biting political satire. Ligeti of course had suffered greatly under both Nazism and Communism and so found political satire a logical theme for his Opera.
This production has divided critics and they have either praised it or panned it. One wonders what Ligeti himself would have made of it."
For his Opera, Ligeti has borrowed from older music forms and operatic conventions and quoted or referred to such diverse themes as Offenbach’s Can-can and the bass line opening of the finale of Beethoven’s 'Eroica' Symphony."
The central subject of the Opera is mortality and its central character is Death, in the form of the character Nekrotzar. Set in an imaginary 'Breughelland', a country derived from Breughel's paintings, the Opera shows a drunken common man, Piet the Pot, and the sinistre Grand Macabre, Nekrotzar, who appears to announce the coming end of the world to two lovers, Amanda and Amando. But in a land ruled by eros, alcohol and corruption, his plan to unleash the Apocalypse bursts like a soap bubble. The people continue to lead their lives as before and refuse to be frightened by thoughts of death and a dark future…
Nekrotzar then kills Mescalin, who has desired a more energetic sexual partner than her astrologer husband. She accompanies him and Piet to the Palace of the young Prince Go- Go, scene of conflicting politicians. "
