In 2003, the album was ranked number 6 on Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time", placing that same position again in 2012.
Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father, Marvin Gay, Sr. on April 1, 1984 at their house at 2101 South Gramercy Place in Western Heights in the West Adams district of Los Angeles. Gaye was shot twice following an altercation with his father.
