From The New York Times: "A veteran jazz drummer with a knack for literate funk, Terri Lyne Carrington has her fifth such album, "The Mosaic Project" (Concord). It comes with a strong concept: all the 20-odd musicians featured are women, from the pianist Helen Sung to the percussionist Sheila E. The caliber of these artists speaks for itself; there's no sense of compromise here, or of an agenda limiting the options. And Ms. Carrington, who produced the album, brings accessibility and continuity to the listening experience. Vocalists play a prominent role: there are showcases for Dee Dee Bridgewater and Nona Hendryx, Carmen Lundy and Esperanza Spalding. The album's most politically strident song, Bernice Reagon's 'Echo,' elicits a chillingly sober performance from Dianne Reeves; its most sumptuous, Al Green's 'Simply Beautiful,' comes next, with Cassandra Wilson ensconced in smoky languor."
