The traditional birth attendant: linking communities and health services

The maternal mortality ratio of 1044 deaths per 100,000 live births in Somalia is one of the highest in the world. The lack of availability and access to basic and emergency obstetric care, long distances, high transportation costs to reach a health facility, and low literacy levels are the major contributors to high maternal mortality in rural Somali communities. During 2011, 43% of the pregnant mothers preferred to deliver at home instead of at a health facility. The availability and accessibility of traditional birth attendants influenced their choice. Because traditional birth attendants generally hold a position of respect and influence within their communities, they are uniquely equipped to inform and assist women and their families in preparing for birth. Although most of the traditional birth attendants have no formal training, WHO is committed to increase their skills and knowledge on referral guidelines and aseptic techniques, prevent further complications, increase the number of safe deliveries and provide them with special medical kits.
