Starship Troopers: Terran Ascendancy had it’s Copyrights passed into the open domain A number of years ago. It is considered Abandoware, making it completely FREE to download and play LEGALLY. However, it is a bit of arse to get working. Follow the links below to get started. You will need to download the Zip Folder and extract it onto either a virtual drive, or burn it onto a disc. Once this has been done, run the programme and you will then have to install that game from your virtual drive / CD onto your computer (Convoluted I know). If you are using an NVidia graphics card, you will need to install the NVida patch. Once this has been installed, extract it into the area you have installed the game to. It will ask you to replace a few components, especially the Starship ‘Troopers application’. Click accept to this. After all that, whenever I want to play this game, I cannot just double click the shortcut. Every time I have to troubleshoot compatibility and use the recommended settings. A complete arse I know, but it’s completely free, so you can’t complain too much right?

Starship Troopers was one of my favourite movies when I was a child. I was too young to understand the complexities of Its satire on Fascism, but the CGI was amazing for something made in 1993, and the battles were Amazing. I would highly recommend the movie, just don’t bother with the awful sequels. The game draws inspiration from both the film and the original Novel, Implementing Marauder suits, Telepathy and mind control.

Sadly, for something technically considered a strategy game, there isn't a whole lot of strategy, at least not during missions. Success or failure is far more dependant on how you equip your strike force before an operation, rather than your action's during. Save for a few instance where you have to use turrets for defence, 90% of the time the optimal strategy will be to keep your squad close together where they can amass their firepower.

As such, arguably the biggest downfall of the game is its difficulty curve. It’s really not that hard, and peaks in challenge around the mid-point of the game. The final act is lacklustre, and the final mission is borderline insulting. A nice, last stand type scenario where you get assaulted with waves of bugs and tankers would have been nice. For some reason, In Mission 9: Hydra, Bugs will pour from Bug holes at an alarming rate. Why this was not maintained for the later missions I do not know. Once you get the first Class suits, the rest of the game becomes a Cakewalk Unfortunately. Still, It’s a fun and enjoyable little game.
