Horatio William Parker (1863-1919) was an American composer and teacher. He was a central figure in musical life in New Haven, Connecticut in the late 19th century, and is best remembered as the teacher of Charles Ives.
The symphonic poem A Northern Ballad (1899) is one of Horatio Parker's rare instrumental works, but it achieved great success in its time: within a year of its completion the work had been performed by the symphonies of Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, New Haven, and New York. The lyrical work begins in E minor with a theme "of the folk-song variety" (Parker). The music that follows is structured in a traditional three-part sonata form which ends in an unexpected coda in D-flat major. ~ Wikipedia & Art of the States
