Standard care in the U.S. is not Evidence-Based. Standard maternity care in the U.S. is intervention intensive, expects trouble, and does not promote, support, or protect physiological birth. Standard care in a hospital includes the routine use of intravenous lines, continuous electronic monitoring, epidurals, and restrictions on eating and drinking and movement. Women give birth on their backs, and directed pushing is the norm. None of these practices reflects the best available research. These interventions and restrictions make labor and birth more difficult for women by increasing stress, disrupting the hormonal orchestration of labor, and interfering with the natural, physiologic process of labor and birth. The result is unintended complications, including cesarean. The cesarean rate is now almost 32% in the United States and has been rising steadily.
